What Men Can Do About Domestic Violence
Men play an important role in efforts to stop violence against women. All men have the opportunity to serve as role models for other men and boys in regards to the treatment of women and girls. Boys need to be taught at a young age that violence against women is wrong and will not be tolerated. Men are in a unique position to communicate this message in a strong, compassionate, and meaningful way. Working in partnership, men and women together can make enormous strides toward changing attitudes and perceptions around domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
Although abusers can be female and victims can be male, statistics show that the opposite is more often true. Societal attitudes reinforce male privilege and, in general, enable abusers (of any gender) and hinder victims.
Increasing numbers of men are combining their voices and resources to take a stand against violence against women. We live in a world where 1 in 5 female college students are sexually assaulted, 1 in 3 women are the victims of DV, and more than half of middle and high-school girls experience sexual harassment in school. The vast majority of this violence is perpetrated by men – men who work with, socialize with, play sports with, attend a faith community, etc., with non-abusive men. In many other aspects of their lives, abusive men are not violent at all. Individual men and men’s organizations are beginning to ask: Why do we as men stand for this violence towards women and girls?
Schuylkill Hope Center for Victims of Domestic Violence (Hope Center) is interested in working with men in our community to address society’s attitudes that tacitly condone violence against women and girls. For more information locally, contact Hope Center at 570.622.3991.

The #HearMeOut Challenge is part of the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence’s (PCADV) Engaging Men Campaign, their annual initiative to include boys and men in prevention causes.
Championed by PCADV, the Engaging Men campaign is designed to provide a much-needed male presence within the movement to end gender-based violence.
Knowing that our society perpetuates tones of toxic masculinity and what it means to “be a man,” we acknowledge that many men may feel uncomfortable discussing domestic violence and standing up against harmful behaviors. PCADV wants to enlist men as allies and to celebrate those who are working in their communities to destigmatize conversations around masculinity and healthy relationships, and who have joined us in our mission to end domestic violence.
